Area Agency on Aging:
Emergency Services for Seniors & Disabled Individuals

The Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living, Senior Citizen’s Centers, as well as other aging and disabilities services providers and service partners, encourage seniors and other special needs individuals to plan for, develop, share, and supply or provision their own personal and/or family emergency plan.
One of the major lessons from recent experiences with special needs individuals during localized or national emergencies has been that we all need to be - - as much as is possible - - more reliant on ourselves for basic needs and essential services during an utility outage, pandemic, natural disaster, extreme weather event, or terrorism threat or attack.  The larger and more wide-spread the event, the less likely it will be that over-taxed emergency and public service responders will be able to get to everyone that needs help in a timely manner.

Services

The Bluegrass Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living and local Senior Citizen’s Centers have and continue have discussions, with emergency planners, first responders, and emergency and disaster relief agencies, around the needs of special populations during emergency events.  Both Bluegrass AAA&IL and area Senior Citizen’s Center staff members are available to talk to individuals and groups about emergency preparedness, and ways in which individuals and families can become better prepared.
Additionally, many area Senior Citizen’s Centers are also designated as emergency community shelters, as well as being designated by county and state emergency management agencies as a source for information about where to go and what to do in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency.  Further, the State Health Department has also partnered with the Bluegrass AAA&IL and area Senior Citizen’s Centers to provide heath information and pandemic disease instruction and direction should an event of that kind occur in our area.

Eligibility
All individuals aged 60 and over, as well as those individuals with disabilities, are welcome to participate in emergency services programs and preparedness events offered by the Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living and area Senior Citizen’s Centers.

Application

There is no application, per se, for these services and programs, although many Senior Citizen’s Centers may require registration for individuals making repeated use of program opportunities at their sites.  There is no fee for the services, programs, or the registration.
